Recognizing Community Heroes - Programs
Police Officer of the Year Award
Our club contributes to crime prevention by each year presenting a member of the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa Police Departments with a Police Officer of the Year plaque. This presentation is usually accompanied with a questio-and-answer session on crime-related topics.
Firefighter of the Year Award
Our club annually contributes to fire prevention by presenting a member of the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa Fire Departments with a Firefighter of the Year plaque. This presentation is usually accompanied with a question-and-answer session and fire- and paramedic-related topics.
Book of Golden Deeds
This program is designed to honor the good deeds of America's unsung heroes: recognizing those uncommon men and women, who, if not for this project, might never receive the acclaim they deserve. Annually, the club invites a worthy individual to lunch and presents him or her with a handsome plaque and a lively, standing ovation. The 2013 winner was Dr. Amy Nagy, Newport Elementary School's principal. Under Dr. Nagy's tutelage, the school's fourth grade state writing scores went from 13% to 100% over a period of eight years. Newport Beach Elementary, by the way, is the only California elementary school actually located on the beach!
